Get Girls in STEM is a project designed by a Girl Scout earning her Gold Award. The focus is on engaging elementary-aged girls with STEM-related activities to help close the gender gap prevalent in both school and the workforce. Seventeen activities were created to assist with this, covering a wide range of standards and fundamental concepts. They are available for download here.

The Girl Scout Gold Award challenges Cadettes and Ambassadors (high school girls) to make a lasting, positive difference in the world. The project must be sustainable, continuing after her involvement concludes, and make a measurable impact in her community.

What's the Gold Award?

Why did I choose this project?

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), women make up only 30% of all researchers globally. Data for various countries can be compared here.

STEM for Her reports that women make up 24% of the workforce in STEM-related careers.

In 2016, statistics show that 12.4% of all engineers in Australia were female.  In 2017, women made up 25.5% of all computer/math occupations and  16.2% of all architecture and engineering occupations. See the full fact sheet here.

Bringing STEM activities into the home and classroom at an early age allows young girls to explore the field with the support of parents and teachers. By enouraging a love of the subject at a young age, we can gradually close the gender gap in schools and the workforce.
